rx-7 3 seater

i was thinking about trying to put a 3rd seat in the back of my 7 im sure it's been done but, what would be a good way to mount a seat in the back for someone under 5'0?

Hey Daniel,

If you had an FB, you can get back seats (pretty rare, though). There where some made by Mazda (the Japan RX-7s had rear seats for example) and there are some aftermarket ones floating around. Also, I have heard of people adapting a 2nd gen rear seat to work.

Things are a bit more tricky with the SAs. There is additional bracing behind there that prevents and easy backseat install. With FBs, you just remove the bins and related stuff and install the seats.

This will give you an idea of how small the seats are:

No room at all. Maybe enough for a small child or a midget or a cat, but that's about it.

Everyone thinks the back of an FB is so cramped. I disagree, while its not overly roomy there is a decent amount of headroom. Try cramming into the back of an exotic such as a vanquish

Haha, yeah... the girl was only in there for a few blocks. Less than 5 mins ride.

Years ago i cut up a rear seat i had from a neon and set up a single rear seat in the back of the rx-7. The rear passenger sat sideways behind the front passenger, with their feet behind the driver. I used the strut tower bolt, and the passenger seat belt bolt to attach a belt so it would be legal.

Heh, try fitting 3 people into a fb made for 2. Even tinier seats than the vanquish are the newer porsche rear seats and lexus sc430 seats. No joke you got room for maybe 2 bags of groceries because you have to push the seat back so far just to sit in the dang car

Back in high school, my friend Scott bought a rustbucket beater 68 mustang, took out all the seats except the driver's, & covered the interior space with pillows.

Then, he took the passenger seat & bolted it sideways in the trunk space, after taking the trunk lid off & faking up a "roll bar" out of some old tubing.

We could get like 9 kids in there. Amazing we never got a ticket, but the rules were a lil more relaxed in the 70's, in Nebraska.

I drove to spring break with 2 people in the back. Got pulled over too and issued a warning. I made up story that there car broke down and I was giving them a lift. Hatch was open a bit with some rope and legs sticking out over the back bumper.

(That was 21 years ago but still hehe).

Clearly, the problem was that you forgot the red flag.

LoL

If you want to make it carry 3 people just cut it up and make it like a F1 McClaren. Driver in the front middle and the passenger on each side slightly behind.

Anyone ever thought of putting the Ford Ranger style back seats in it? Where you sit sideways in the back? would help legroom for one person. Two would be tight again....

Why are you interested in putting MORE people in your car? The beauty of a two seat sportscar is that you have FEWER people to drive around.

A ranchero bed with a lazy boy . So you can park then chill in your lazy boy while people stare in amazement.

I have a rear seat in my fb now. I actually had TWO people ride back there for several miles. It was two guys, and one was pretty much mounting the other. WHat did I care. I was driving!
