Running out of power

been driving my rex for a bout a week now.

As soon as it reaches 3k it starts sputtering and acting up.

Is there a carb issue or an engine issue? I'm changing the fuel filter tomorrow.

I need help.

Couldbe secondaries are not opening, although that doesnt really start happening until closer to 4K. I say take it out and see how fast it will go in 3rd gear. That may help you figure out if you are running out of fuel or a possible other problem.

^^It'll only do about 55-60 in fifth....The only way it'll accelerate is to hold the accelerator barely open any more and it'll bog. It WILL reach higher RPMs but when it hits 4k or so the throttle will stick (freakin' scary)

^ the ignition is good it came out of my '85 GSL which ran perfectly.

I'm planning on swapping the engine from the '85 into my '82 but I want to get this one running WAY better before I pull it that way when I put it into another car I won't have to screw with it so much.

Hmm, I wonder if your little doohickey is flipped over on the throtttle linkage. What do they call that thing, the teeter-totter?

Nope, checked that.

I lied, it IS at about 4k when it starts acting up. I'm thinking secondaries arn't working what should I do to clean them up?

how many things have you actually checked? What does your timing look like? Have you rebuilt the carb? Has the car been sitting for a long period of time? Could there be a massive vacuum leak somewhere?

Need more details... Sputtering like that could be several things, does it make any weird noises or anything?

It chirps under any serious acceleration along with the sputtering, yes it has set for about two years, that is y I'm trying to figure out how to clean the secondaries, I don't want to rebuild it unless I have to.

What has been done so far:

1) Draind old fuel cleared all fuel lines

2) replaced plugs/wires/cap/rotor off of '85 and I put them on that car (10 miles maybe)

3) checked every electrical connection under hood

4) checked for plugged exhaust

5) Went through the vaccume system

6) dizzy was bad so used dizzy from '85 (timing in current car was done and was correct)

Anything else?

try the mech secondaries mod, but dont adjust the accelerator pump yet. Mine werent working either and had no idea until I went mech. I broke 2 bread ties before they opened. The secs were stuck closed from buildup of gunk or something. After I figured this out, I took the carb off and sprayed about 2 or 3 cans of carb cleaner all over it to get any varnish buildup that there may be.

Actually, just start the carn and then pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Let it run out of gas and die. THEN, do the mech secondaries mod and leave the fuse out so you dont pump tons of fuel into your carb while pumping the pedal with the engine off.
