The way I see it is:
Sealed box great results with minimal hassle
Ported Box very efficeint, lower power handleing below the tuned freq. a little tougher to build (works pretty good for lots of kind of music)
band pass : wheter it being single reflex (1 port) or dual reflex (2 ports) efficent, relative low roll off, limited freq range, differcult to design and tune (Ive done a lot of these), usually a very big box
isobaric : wheter being dual reflex or single, same as the bandpass in terms of construction, very differecult. Usuage of 2 woofers get you a box 1/2 the size at the expense of another woofer, play extremely low (when coupling 2 woofers together, you 1/2 the vAS and the FS becomes the effective measurement) I once did a box for a 99 mustang with 8 12's in the trunk. He actually wanted 4, but you know that aint possible to fit, so I did 2 acoustic coupled iso-groups with 4 woofers each side with a common chamber in the middle. Long story, but it hit VERY VERY well.

Mike: Haha dump 12 years of experience in minutes. I could talk for days about theory too, but typing it is a entirely different matter.
I think many people get caught up in the theory or the ideas that are suggest from theory. Like most people will say for sound quality go with a sealed box. Well that is crap because you can have good sound quality in a ported box. In the end it is the sub, working with the box, and finally your vehical that makes it sound good or not good. Thiele-Small parameters are a good starting point, but you will still need to build a couple of test boxes to get the "best" setup for a given sub.
My thoughts are this stay with sealed or ported. Don't think tuning a ported box is really that hard because it is not. Stay away from band pass because you are just going to get a single note bass wonder unless you know what you are doing. (In some sense the car makes all subs a band pass box!!!) Isobaric setups are really cool but most don't want to play that game.
My personal prefernce is a ported box with very low tuning. I used to run a pair of 10W6s in my integra with a 28 Hz tuned port with 1.5 ft^3 per sub. The book called for 30 Hz and 1.0 ft^3 of air space per sub. It pulled low and clean and I cut of the upper end at 65 Hz with a 12 db x-over. I personally don't like 80/100 Hz and up coming from my sub in large power levels! However many many hard rock guys like bass in that frequency because bass drums (w/ harmonics) show up there. That is my last thought for you ... consider what kind of music you like to help guide your selection.

anyone had any experiences with aperodic chambers with the rear of the car? (is anyone going to be making those fibregalss enclosures for the 10's for a stealth install?
