rumors of a first gen sub box for the tailight area. you down?

There was once some long talk in this forum on the subject of subs. Storage box location sucks, etc etc. Apparently the tailight area can be used to fit a couple of 8's in there which seems like they should pound pretty nice in our little cars. There was even some talk, uh-em Mike-P, of making some boxes for that area and selling them out to fellow forum members. What a grand idea....

So, I've just recently finished my first round of upgrades (Nak 45Z, Boston Rally's up front, PPI amp) and the damn thing sounds so so good that I now need an sub(s) so it can sound so so so good. So, it looks like it is up to me to start this endeavor??

Anyone got any thoughts?

Right on.

"A Vulgar display of Power".

I LOVE IT!!! Cool Decal.

hotty 05-15-02 12:15 AM

i built a ported sub box from 3/4" MDF, for 2 10's requiring 1 cu ft each. the outside dim. are 35" x 16.5" x 9". -------------------
! ! !
! ! !
! ! !
--------------------

the ports - 2 3" diameter ABS pipe x 13.25" long. Face the subs up at the hatch, the ports forward. Makes an incredible improvement over any other box ive seen.

by the way - my subs are 2 10" Rockford Fosgate HE Punch's SVC

BadAssRX-7 05-15-02 12:54 AM

and to help you understand yes it was fast.... and i just found this so i figured what the hell.

Adsy01 05-15-02 01:48 AM

you could try somthing like this perhaps?
http://www.users.bigpond.com/adsy01/html%20pics/s34.jpg

the bottom is fiberglass and the side and top are MDF theres a few more pics of it on my web site
the only boot (trunk) space i needed was to store the sunroof.

BTW my sub is a Soundstream SPL12.. the box comes in at about 1cuft (with the speaker in) which is the min recomended size for my sub....
it sounds really tight and punchy but it did take more power to get the car shaking as apoosed to my old big box which was 1.75cuft

yayarx7 05-15-02 02:53 AM

I am down, first you need to select some subs, then figure out the dimentions they require.

AJC13B 05-15-02 03:19 AM

Wow

Never thought of hiding them under there! I am going to redo the back of my car after I run my 10 and those are some damn good ideas!!

Thanks guys!

Damn guys I hate fiberglass !!! :D Ok after I drop this motor in, I will try to get a prototype rolling. Brownmound you gonna be my test man?

I had that thought of a PANTERA sticker, saying Vulgar Display of Power on it but with my old 85 Rx-7, considering I got my ass SMOKED by anything with a 5 speed, I settled for Far Beyond Driven :)

MIKE

ghetto-rx7 05-15-02 01:14 PM

um i figured out how 2 wire my subs and all but were do u hook up the amp 2???

Pele 05-15-02 02:19 PM

Im Down.

Stealth Install? Count me in.

I can solder and make a stereo install look really nice and professional. I just dont understand frequency curves and cross over setting and box building... If someone can build a good all around sub box that'll fit back there and be stealthy, I'll pay good money for it.

I don't have time to go through all the advanced calculus and physics required to do those formulas in the "So... You want to build a speaker enclosure" book.

nimrodTT 05-15-02 02:32 PM

What are the dimensions on the stealth boxes that go next to the tail lights?

And is someone going to make this are are we just going to stand around and admire the pretty pictures?

The dimensions are what you can maeasure, and what you can fit back there reasonably.. Like I tell people at work, the car dictates to what you can do or what you cant do easily... :D

Im gonna make some of them up, but if theres not any money in it. I bet I stop at 2 :)

Could someone with them already made give me the dimensions so I dont have to do the hard part?

hanman 05-15-02 05:17 PM

mar3, you are such a pessimist.
I thought you were a audiophile? Give us some advice.

LOL :) If I get paid and paid good for them, I'll produce them all day long, wood working and fiberglass are my love to hate job topics :)

Man I wish everything was handed to me :) LOL No seriosuly, you are talking about a box with MANY compound angles... Simple L X W X H aint gonna cut it on this one :)

brownmound 05-15-02 06:18 PM

for serious guys

Well, Bad Ass has the right idea there. Max has the same idea thought I think his were a prefab box for full ranges where he plugged the other holes. And what's with the shelf paper??

Mike-P, don't bust your balls over this. You got plenty to contend with with that Cosmo swap eh? I need suspension in a bad way but I really want a subwoofer. I think I can do MDF, never done fiberglass though. I guess I need to get in there and start measuring around, picking out appropriate subs, etc. I've never built a sub box before in my life but I don't see it being too incredibly hard. Just measure, measure again, put it all into autocad, draw it up and cut it out. Works for me.

I'll probably get started on this in the next month or so. Good hot Texas summer project. I'll try to document progess and how-to the how thing. Unless Bad Ass wants to do that for us, since he seems to have a good design already!

I'll probably do sealed enclosure. Easier to design, and I really like tight, punchy bass. Listen to a lot of house in the mound. Also bang Michael Watts, but that should ok with a sealed too. You feel me?

Right on. Glad to see this topic took off so quickly with some genuine interest.

Right on.
