Rubber trim outside sunroof cover necessary??

Ok so I'm in the process of prepping my RX7 for paint and I took the rubber trim on the sunroof cover off to sand the whole thing better. Well, when I put the cover back on the car, I noticed that it looks way better without the rubber piece. I'm thinking about just leaving the rubber piece off. But, I was wondering, is that piece necessary to keep water out??

Thanks

Do you mean the hard plastic trim?

Can't speak for the 1st gen, but my FC has a similar edging that not only helps seal against leaks but also protects the steel edge from paint chipping.

The outer ring only provides protection from paint chipping as far as I can tell.

Took mine off, never had any problems with it. Looks much better off than on.

Beware you don't cut yourself on the metal edge if you remove the plastic.

the outer seal is not necessay but provides excellent protection against paint chips and bending of the sunroof's outer edge. i's leave it in place or get a glass moonroof to replace your steel one.

They are not really sharp.

I took mine off for looks many years ago and had no problems. I have recently re-painted the car and have re-installed the trim. It is to protect the roof from chipping when it is removed. It does not function as a seal.
