rpm says 5k at normal idle???

rpm says 5k at normal idle???

ok my altanator went so i got a new one and i put in a new voltage regulator as well now my rpm gauge says 5k whe the car is idleing ok and my add oil light is on ??? any ideas? car is a 79 with everything STAYING stock so please dont tell me to just put a 85 altanator in it just to get rid of the old voltage regulator system.

It sounds like it is staying on 'volts'. Either the alt isn't charging (broken belt, plug disconnected, etc.) or there is a problem with the choke & check relay. Have Autozone or someone test the alt on the car to see if it is charging. If it is, then you need to look at the choke & check relay. If it isn't charging, then you may need a new alt (verify that the plug in the back of the alt is plugged in fully first).

all fixed .. it ended up comming down to replacing the fuze ... thanks for the help.
