Rough idle, sometimes dies on me at a light or coming down from being in gear.

Hey y'all,

Just a few weeks ago I got my clutch master replaced. Test drove it after I picked it up, perfectly fine. Only then when I pulled up near the shop again it started giving me a really bad idle - took it back to the guy, he looked at it for five minutes and couldn't figure it out. It's shaky, and my fan clutch seems to have gone out as well - making a sound whenever it idles. Checked my spark plugs (they're brand new, NGK!), Just replaced my dist cap and I need to change the rotor button which seems like a pain in the *** (getting the part in a few minutes). Has only a rough idle, won't really show while driving. Only noticable thing is that if I don't give it enough gas while in gear no matter the Rpm it seems to give me a little bit of jolting in sync to the engine firing. On top of that I've noticed that while warming it up it gives a little more "pops" in the exhaust in tune with how the engine is running.. getting all electrical stuff out of the way first before I see if it's a problem with the coasting valve?

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks a lot, guys!!

The noise you hear my not be the fan clutch, had a similar noise in my car. Turned out to be the bearing in water pump, Mazda oe replacement, only 5-6 yrs old, maybe 2k miles on it. Could only hear the noise warm and at base idle, raise idle speed slightly and couldn't hear it. Try this: warm up the car til idling at base idle speed to duplicate the noise, shut off & remove fan/clutch. Start car, noise gone it's the fanclutch. Noise still there, loosen drive belt(s) and pull them off pulleys, restart and see if noise is gone, yes? Could be water pump bearing, spin water pump pulley, alt pulley, air pump pulley & see if you can pick up any noise from each. If you don't know age of ignition wires, recommend replacing them. They're not very expensive. While wires are off plugs, pull them and look at them, all 4 should look the same. While cap and rotor are off eyeball distributor shaft while someone briefly cranks car, you can pull a primary wire off each coil so they won't fire or ground each coil wire. Look to be certain shaft spins true not off center/wobbly.

Check simple things first. Make sure he didn't unplug or otherwise dislodge something under the
hood that would mess with the idle. A vacuum leak is my first thought.

Heres the logic for this, before it was at the shop, it was fine right? So its something he had to
have touched either accidentally or for some reason while changing the clutch master. To change
the clutch master he has to undo the lines to the tranny, unbolt the master and disconnect it
from the pedal.

1. Make sure he didn't disturb the vacuum line to the brake booster.
2. Make sure he didn't disturb the vacuum lines on the rats nest.
3. Inside the car, make sure he didn't break or disconnect any wires and check your fuses.

Fix the idle issue first and then proceed to look into the WP noise.

Hi y'all. Sorry for the REEAALLY late reply, I think it's my smog pump because the noise is coming from the smog pump itself. No vacuum lines seem like they're bad, the very obnoxious "whoo"-ing sound comes right from the air pump. I think a bearing went bad maybe and so I ordered a reman one. Attempted to put it in myself but the tensioning bolt and main bolt seems to be seized and I'm not very keen on stripping them.

After I replace it I will see how it runs.. hopefully better. I think I can hear the starter striking against the flywheel? I'm not sure.
