Rough Idle

I'm restoring an '83 GS. I've got the engine running - replaced plugs, wires, rotor, rotor cap, vacuum hoses. The car starts fine cold but once it warms up it idles a little rough (sounds like mild back firing now and then). If I stomp the pedal, the engine wants to die - and sometimes does die.

It runs smooth at any speed but idle. I ran it up to 7000RPM yesterday, quickly let off the gas and it back fired immediately but then coasted on down to 750 RPM with that slight idle roughness.

I've sprayed carb cleaner all around the carburetor to see if I can find a vacuum leak but it hasn't made any difference.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I think you need to adjust idle mixture to get rid of the crappy sounding idle.
I also think your accel;erator pump isn't working.

Remove the air horn, and operate the linkage by hand, looking into the carb.
You should see two healthy squirts, one into each primary.

Thanks for the tips. The accelerator pump seems to work fine.

I moved idle screw and it died. Now I can't seem to find the right idle point - once warmed up I let my foot off the gas and as RPM drop below 1000 starts to run very rough and then dies. Still starts easy.

Still have the 'soft' random backfire sound while choke out warming up and running above 1000 rpm after warm.

Thanks in advance.

Bill, look in the FACTS sticky thread at the top of the page. Chances are the answer to your problem lies in the links regarding carbs there.

I'll try to have my website back up tonight, which may have some useful info on it for you.
