Rotary Engines and Alphabet Soup
Rotorhead Historians-
I’m trying to figure out all the different naming conventions for the various 13b engines built from the early eighties up to the point that RENESIS took over. Specifically, I’m confused about the following designations:
13b-AP
13b-DEI
13b-RESI
13b-RE EGI
13b-REW
I’d like to know when each of these models were built, what cars they were installed in, what kind of stock horsepower they put out, and what the heck do all the letters and acronyms mean? Are there other designations that I missed?
And yes, before you ask, I’ve looked in the FAQs and searched the forums, but Wikipedia and a few other online sources seem to contradict some of the information I’ve been able to piece together here. I’ve got the all the S4 vs. S5 stuff figured out, and I’ve also been able to understand the FB-FD designations, but these engine terms/acronyms have me stumped.
Thanks in advance…

DEI = Dynamic Effect Intake. It's the intake box on top of the engine that acts as a mild virtual supercharger by tuning the intake pressure pulses the way a good header tunes exhaust pulses for smooth flow.
EGI is, IIRC, Electronic Gas Injection

FB+FC=F-ME
The REW is the twin turbo 3rd gen engine and its supposed to stand for Rotary Engine W(double turbo)
The whole EGI thing is just Mazda's version of EFI,which is the more common acronym.Back in the 80's fuel injection was just getting going,so just about any car that had it,flaunted it with i,EFI,TPI,TBI or EGI embelms on the fenders or engine covers.Sometimes, the 13B-EGI designation is used to describe the non-turbo 13B's that were used from 84 to 92 in the GSL-SE and all 2nd gens that werent turbo. They range from 135 to 160 HP with modest torque and all are 6 port injected engines. The single turbo engines from 87-92 are known as the 13B-T.
The AP and RESI Ive never heard of.....dont think they stand for anything,at least not an actual engine.Like the DEI,it might just be an acronym for a system of the engine or car,but not the engine as a whole.
There was the DISC,DISCII and ROSCO rotary engines that played around with direct and stratified fuel injection concepts in the 70's and 80's,but they were never put into production. The Miller Cycle technology I believe was carried into the Renesis.

You should read this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Wankel_engine
It's a pretty decent primer on the various Mazda rotaries.

RE-EGI stands for Renesis Engine-Eletronic Gas Injected.
1984-????. In the USA the fastest FB = the GSL-SE
In japan the fastest FB was a 12A turbo non intercooled carburettor fed. (1984) in 1985 they changed chassis and engine design to fuel injected.

2nd, you bring back a thread from the dead,
to post inaccurate information?
To the original poster:
The RENESIS did not become available until the production of the RX-8.
It's a new type of Rotary engine, with no peripheral ports, only side ports.
itzweapon meant, ROTARY ENGINE - ELECTRONIC GASOLINE INJECTION.
The OEM 12A Turbos were all fuel injected, albeit crudely.
Bustin' your ballz, Ronnie.

I didn't bring back the thread to post inaccurate information. I was looking for info when I came across this thread and felt that it deserved a little more attention than it got.
Actually I meant to say Renesis, but I stand corrected.
I've always been under the impression that the JDM FB's were carburated, sorta like the Starions and Conquests 84-89. A form of throttle body injection...either way you learn some new everyday.
Since when you became the RX7Club post police and resident ball buster?

You mistook him itzweapon, he was just playin with you.
Throttle body injection is just that, "Injection". People get confused by it because they looked similar to Carburetors.
