On the road again & timing & carb questions
Well I got back on the road again after installing a reman engine, fired right up too,(after I remembered to pull out the choke) lots & lots & lots of smoke but it cleared up. Anyway, it runs nice and all but idles just a little rough. I'm thinking the timing and carb need to be dialed in just right.
So, heres the question, I set the timing WITHOUT the vacuum hoses connected right?
And heres the carb question, at what point on the tach should the secondary throat butterfly valves start to open? Also, what makes them open or how do they actually open? I snooped around there and could see nothing that makes them work, whats up with that?
Thanks

Too much to answer in a reply. Do a search of the forum, 1st Gen specific on each of your Q's. And yes, disconect your vacuum advance hoses and time it to Yaws specs (24-16), then throw away your vacuum hoses.

The secondaries only open under load, as in when the car is moving. They open by vacuum from the carb. You cannot just rack the throttle with the hood up and watch them open, it won't happen.

on pg.78 of haynes fig 3:40, check this diaphram for holes or crackes, also you can remove a couple of spirals from the spring that will let the 4bbl kick in at lower rpms under power, no biggie but just a little more responsive to flooring it, just dont cut too much off, or go to junk yard and get a spare to toy with,,,,,,,also check the shaft that works the passengers side two barrels to see if its free to move (do with engine off) it may be frozen or restricted, put some lubricant on the exposed shaft too.........http://pittdp.homestead.com/underhood.html

The YawPower timing recommendations are set at 4000 RPM, NOT at idle speed. I can't remember who, but someone on this forum has repeatedly warned NOT to use the YP settings for fear of wasting spark plug electrodes that then fall into the engine. He recommends 20 and 10 at 4000 RPM for the street. He claims he actually lost plugs due to the YP settings...Who be dat??
