Not too many places carry aftermarket rims for our cars because the bolt pattern is Mazda specific: 4x110mm.

I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you. The money that you're going to spend on rims could be far better spent on making your car handle better/go faster. Remember that the shorter the tire, the better the gearing for acceleration.

Thumbs up rims

Try this link http//www.teamdynamicsusa.com PH# 1-909-947-0114 for sizes and
dealer info. I have some of their rims in 16x7 with the 4x110 bolt pattern, they fit perfectly with 205/45/16 nitto tires. The type of rim is called motorsport, They are
really nice. They will make them for the 4x114.5 pattern and 2nd and third gen
also. rx7doctor If anyone wants pictures of these i will finsish my roll up this weekend and pm me if you want me to e-mail you pics.

I respectfully ( but totally ) disagree with the above statement. What a 90 year old tastes like: Depends.

What's your take on wheel/tire size?

I was under the impression that shorter=better.

I look at it like this: Depending on your horsepower and torque, the COMBINATION of your tranny gears/rear end gear/tire circumference will yield differing results over time. I will exaggerate to show the extremes.

With the same gearing combination, If you had really tall tires and tons of horsepower and torque, you will have both quicker acceleration ( from torque ) and higher top speed ( from horsepower ) versus the same horsepower and torque with really short tires. Obviously.

Since most of us don't have tons of horsepower and torque, it is better to decide which is your goal ( higher top end and less quick OR quicker with less top end ). If you go for both, you'll not do be as fast or as quick as you would by choosing to be one or the other.

Put another way, with say 150 RWHP, you might have the right gears and tire comb. to reach 150 MPH. But it might take quite awhile to reach that speed. ( Fast, but not quick ). With another gear and tire comb. you might run 13 second 1/4 miles times but your top speed may be only 112 miles per hour. ( Quick, but not fast )

The tires height is part of the overall gear equation and therefore DEPENDS on all the other factors AND what your intentions are. Including your definition of better... Is faster better than quicker ? You decide.

Or maybe I'm full of ****. Hell, I don't know. Would I know if I were ? Hmmm...

Grimey appears to be on the money on this one. At least, that's the way I was taught.

Yup, but I just want wider tires for the rear. More rubber=more traction

Personally I would prefer the quicker rather than have a higher top speed. I mean when am I going to be going 140-150MPH anyway? My car starts to feel light at 110. I like beating people off the line. But thats just me.

Yes, but there are variables there as well. Tread compounds vary greatly. Some tires are stickier ( more tractive ) than other wider ones. Generally, the lower your UTQG treadwear rating, the stickier the tread compound.

Also, another factor is rolling resistence. Some tires inflated to say 35 PSI and mounted on a car are harder to roll than the same size tire from another brand and the same 35 PSI. Some much harder. That is an often overlooked "parasitic loss of horsepower".

Unfortunately, you'll have trouble finding out which are better than others because it's not often reported or part of the tires' required specifications.

Well my comment was, who cares about looking good if your car handles and runs like ****?

Especially for a 1st gen, where unless you paid a decent amount of money for a well-preserved example, lots of things NEED replacing.

Talking opinion

Moses, the thread is not about what you want, besides the correct tire/rim
combination with correct offset will make the car handle better with proper road contact patch, and again did he state that he has a running problem? You guys
need to pay attention to the orginal posters question!!! If you have another issue about other than that then start your own thread, take a pill and go to the lounge, LOL. rx7doctor

Question bolt pattern

The 83 bolt pattern on the front stock chassis is 4x110mm, now the offset i have on my rims is only 18mm with a 16x7, the rear gsle is 4x114.3 usually with an offset of 38mm. rx7doctor The offset on the front is stated for 4x110mm pattern on an 83.

Unless you swap the front over to a se suspension or get a set of custom double drilled rims for both patterns, i once did this when i ordered a custom set of rims
from boyds. Or change the axles back to a 84-85 from a gsl . rx7doctor
