Resurrecting a car that has been sitting for over a year
Hi, I’m an RX-7 newbie and have spent the last couple of days checking out the forum. All I can say is wow! What an awesome resource for RX-7 owners.
So here’s my story and first question.
My son just bought an 82 RX-7 GL that appears to be in excellent shape but it hasn’t been run for at least a year. For being 20 years old it's a sweet looking car with 75K miles and all receipts from the original owner. The guy that owned it died and my son bought it from his daughter so we don’t know why it was sitting but it appears to have a problem with the fuel pump and possibly the alternator since the alternator belt is missing. Other than being dirty the body is perfect and the interior looks like new. At $800 it seemed like to good of a deal to pass up.
The fuel pump kind of rattles but the carb doesn’t seem to be getting any gas. The engine ran smooth for a few seconds when we dripped a little gas down the carb so I feel a little better about that. We’ll probably drop the gas tank and see if it is corroded then move on to the pump, filter and lines and carb. Once we get the fuel problem figured out are there any problems specific to rotaries or RX-7s that would be caused by sitting?

Is it in good shape, Mike? The '84 I just got has clear fuel delivery problems and I want to replace this ugly aftermarket inline thing they tied to the frame-rail with a known quantity before I tear into the carb. It, too, sat for a while. The tires dry-rotted and I even had one disintegrate on me on the way home. Luckily, I was literally 150 from my house when the tire fell apart. I'm going outside to document the acquisition today and do a proper pposting. Let me know. I'm interested in that pump. I can't find the Mallory and I'm getting very hot since it had never been used. Funny how stuff disappears when you move...

i have an extra pump too. chances are you will need to drop the tank and check it also. i bought a 79 gs that had sat for 2.5+ yrs and ended up having to get a new tank, replacing the main fuel line, replacing the pump, and of course the filter. I would get a see through type from advance auto parts or autozone so you can monitor problems easier. chances are the carb is gummed up too. i had to rebuild mine with a 20 dollar advance rebuild kit. its not real hard, just watch that you don't lose some of the small parts like the two little ***** that are in it. there are also two screens where the two main line runners enter the top of the carb. these tend to get ganked and ripped up. right now i'm running a see through filter fore and aft of the fuel pump without screens. i had my aft filter at the carb so i could tell if fuel was getting to the carb. goodluck and enjoy the joys of the 7.
