resetting the timing

how is it done on a 12a?
I've never reset the timing on anything but recently was given a timing light and my car needs it or atleast it seems to.

attach the pickup to the #1 leading plug wire. check the fsm for which notch on the pulley supposed to line up with the pointer. do the same with trailing #1.
