replacing tranny bearing

Tranny makes a small amount of whining noise especially in reverse. Shifts good and very little sludge on plug. I ran Royal Purple in it for about 6000 miles and seemed to clean it up good. I had heard that the front main input shaft bearing is usually the one that begins to wear first. When I had the front cover off there was just a small amount of play in the shaft 1/8" or less. Can this bearing be replace without tearing down the tranny? Haven't taken a close look at it and the manual doesn't really address this issue.
Thanks,
Todd
