Replacing Ash Tray with Gauges

Has anyone used the ash tray space for gauges? I think I'm gonna get a wide band and I may put it there instead of on the pillar. I have used up all of the other spaces with gauges already. If anyone has done this, can you post some pics? Maybe we could get akiratdk to make something. Oh yeah, I will be doing this on the 84-85 style.

From: here, where ever that is.
i havent for that but I have used it for switchs. But I left the ashtray intact and then made a plate for them to mount to, then ran the wires in through some holes I drilled in the bottem, worked good and concealed the switchs. It shouldnt be hard though, the whole ash tray assembly can be taken out by removing 4 screws if I remember correctly. Then you just fab up your sheet metal or what have you and your good to go.

Anything is possible. A little ABS plastic and some fiberglass and your golden.

sweet. I was thinking of trying to make a plate or even use the front of the ashtray ( I have a few spares). Make the hole and use some type of plastic pipe to put behind the gauge to fill in the uneven space from the curve of the ashtray.

I'm surprised I don't have a picture of it installed in the car. I can get one if you want to see it.

Wow, thanks man, that gives me some ideas. I would like to see a pic of your stereo surround with gauges installed if possible. Very clean job! Of yeah, does that plate curve like the ash tray or is it straight?

It's straight...it's just a piece of 1/8" aluminum. I'll try to get a picture tonight. I ended up painting the surround and the gauge panel with some Krylon...I think it was a nickel color, very close to the original color.

If you check the "Mazda Rx7 Performance Handbook", a guy has 2 gauges setup in that spot....my damn scanner sucks, so I can't get the pic.
