removing tranny (hard/easy)???

Ok i got a 83 rx7 and im gonna remove the tranny and i wanted to know if it's easy to remove. Is it gonna work to put her on ramps and remove the tranny. In the hynes repair manual it says i will need a hydraulic press to take the clutch hub off the mainshaft.. what does that mean.

I'm gonna remove the tranny from the 83 and swap it for a 81 rx7 witch i used to run before the engine blew. I had just put in a clutch on the 81 witch isn't even a year old yet. Will the 81 tranny fit in the 83??

not sure about that hydraulic press thing, but no, it's not hard, bolts are easy to get at.

81 WILL work in 83 and vice versa

The 81 tranny should fit into the 83 and if you aren't removing the clutch on either tranny then don't worry about the hydro press thing.

first you should go ask someone at a trans shop what a clutch hub is?????

I think the manual made it up, the only thing that stays on the tranny when you take it out is the throw out bearing, and it slides off the shaft with ease.

you will need to remove the slave cylindar, but dont be discouraged by its location, just grab a 10mm with a 6" extension and throw a magnet on the shaft if needed.

all the bolts are pretty easy to get to, the bolts on the top side of the engine will need a wrench instead of an impact gun or ratchet.

you dont need to drop the drive shaft either, just pull the tranny forward after it has been drop and it will pull out.

make sure if you use ramps that you have enough room to get the tranny out from under the car.

I usally turn the steering wheel all the way right and slip the bell housing out through the driver wheel well.

If this is your first trans job plan a day of it, if not then it shouldnt take more then a couple hours with a buddy.

The hardest part is getting the exhaust off.

I'm pretty sure the manual talks about the hydraulic press when it skims over the idea of doing an at-home rebuild. Which is fairly difficult without the right tools.

If so I would imagine you could just swap out the speedo drive gear in the tranny, its really easy on the second gens, not to sure about the 1st but would imagine its the same.

just remove the 10mm bolt right were the speedo cable goes into the tranny, and behind there is a little gear.

I would say remember to unbolt the shifter, I forgot thatr one about 5 times or so, once on an 81 and the shifter came right through the floor with the trans.

on my 84 it dont work like that though
