Question Removing the Horn Button(?)

Hi,

ust bought me an '85. I'm so excited. It seems to be in decent condition. Previous owner was selling it to move and I was in the right place at the right time.

To get it inspected, I need to get the horn working. I thought I'd start by removig the horn button in the middle of the steering wheel. All that I've read says remove the horn actuator and not how to do it. I''ve pulled on it as hard as I dare. Any hints, tips, etc???

Can't wait to get it on the road!

A real new owner...

Paul

the cap is really a rubber cap that wraps itself around the hard part of the horn... (hard to explain)
just feel around the bottom edge of the horn cap--and pull the rubber cap out and the lift away--voila!

it is kinda like this:

/-----------------------\ <---rubber cap (with the mazda lable on it)
|OOOOOOOOOOOO| <---- the metal part of the horn button

I had trouble with this too =P

You can use a flat screwdriver to carefully pry off the thin skin off of the horn button.

If you're trying to make it work, check the fuses, and all other connections first. It's pretty rare for that button to get screwed up unless somebody either messed with it or removed the steering wheel.

Oh, and congrats!

and it's a good idea NOT to unscrew the screws under the cap.

I did, and ended up losing one 'cause I didn't realise there was a thick spring right under it.

Thanks everyone,

I think I'll check the fuses and everything else before pulling the button. Thanks for the help.

Paul

PS. Any gotchas I need to be aware of. This is my first spinner.

if you have a volt/ohm meter, check the wiring at the horns themselves, the horns may just need adjusting . have someone press on the button while u take a reading. not sure but i think there is a relay also, someone will let you know if there is,,good luck with your great find......
