Removing gas tank!?!?!?

Does anybody have any tips, pics, hints, or clues on how to remove the gas tank? I have it drained I just have to take it down and see if it is all dirty.

Its a hundred times easier than it looks,

Just remember to label the lines, and disconnect the filler neck from the gas door, and disconnect the wiring harness.

Im not sure if all have a drain plug. Open the filler door and remove the 4 10mm bolts. Mark, plug and remove the fuel lines including the sender (non-SE are on top while SE's are on the left side near the filler neck.

The rest, unbolt the straps. In the past, I used a piece of plywood on top of the floor jack. then lower the jack slowly.

if u remove the rubber "collar" from the filler pipe just remember how far up it goes - if not it can ge tricky to relocate the collar in the inner wing panel - i found this out the hard way.....

Unplug the battery, Disconnect the heat sheilds, label and disconnect the fuel supply fuel return, vacum, and cut off valve lines. unplug the fuel gauge, mark the filler neck, secure the tank, and lossen the straps holding it up. and in no time at all you will smell like gas and see above the tank. It's not that bad if you know where everything is suppose to connect to. I have taken mine off and on a few times. good luck and be safe and well ventalated.

The hard part is connecting the lines when putting it back in.

sorry for the hijack, but will a GSL-SE tank fit into a non-SE? I know the lines are different and everything, but what else is different? Will the filler neck match up?

I'm just thinking it might be a good solution for the larger return line needed on a blow-thru 12a setup.

A GSL-SE tank will fit in any 84-85 car Im sure, as a matter of fact the tanks are identical other than the small baffle plate on the -SE tank. I really dont know for sure, but I seem to think the 79-83 tanks were different due to a larger spare tire recess?

SE tank would fit perfect including the filler neck. No go on the SA as the SA uses a full spare tire instead of the donut spare tire BUT again, it can be done. I've done it before so did Gonzz

If you can't fully drain the tank, beware that sloshing gas makes it REALLY unstable as you lower it! 2 people a BIG help.
If your going to the trouble of pulling it, take it to some one like a rad shop that can dunk it in a cleaning tank and really get the crap out!
POR15 (.com) makes a great gas tank sealer kit that will get the insides all sealed up for you
