removing emissions question

i have an 85 gsl. i am replacing the motor with another 12a, and removing all emissions equipment at the same time. the new motor has the block off plates already. what else am i going to need to complete the emissions removal. for examle, one thing i can think of is a different sized fan belt, to fit once the air pump is removed. do i need to get a double belt pulley for my alternator to make this happen?

nick

note: the car does not have air conditioning, or pwr. steering

Be carefull you're steping into uncharted territory here, I don't think this has ever been atempted before!

J/K I think you have pretty much everything covored. Get a double altornator pulley if you wan't to play it safe, but I've never had a problem with belt slippage without the air pump.

I can't believe these jokers didn't help you out. Ok, here's the skinny on the emissions removal. Assuming that you have the necessary blockoff plates, and vacuum caps, the only thing you really need is the belt to fit around the water pump pulley to prevent possible slipping. You don't need the dual alt pulley, unless you feel compelled to spend a lot of money. You'll want to use a 3L220 V-belt to put on the main pulley and go around the empty groove on the water pump pulley. They can be a little tough to find, but you should be able to get your hands on one. Try your local Napa, or hardware store.

Just put it on like you would with a bicycle chain. Get part of the belt inside the pulley and then just crank it around until it slips into the groove. It's going to seem kind of tight going on, but that is what you want. Just mess with it for a while, it will go on. It can be kind of tricky, since neither of the pulleys are adjustable. All of the adjustment typically would come from the air pump, which you will have long since removed at this point. Adding the 3L220 V-belt isn't a total necessity, but it does give you nice piece of mind when you start putting your foot into it a little. You don't want that water pump slipping, and this belt should eliminate that.

As far as the rest of the removal goes, just start ripping stuff out and capping off holes. When you're done make sure you take the proper precautions to prevent "lung mustard" building up. If you don't know about lung mustard, I recommend doing a search. Basically, be on the lookout for white junk building up under you're oil cap. That is bad, which is why you'll want to incorporate a PCV valve somewhere in the system when you're done...

Good luck!

thanks. that is the answer i was looking for. i do know about lung mustard, i'll keep an eye out for that.

when you say block off plate"s", what do you mean?. all i know is the engine im putting in, already has block off plates, which i understood to be one (1) plate which has something to do with the intake manifold. im really new to this. is this all i need or is there something else?.

thanks,

nick
