Removing the door lock

There's something wrong with my door lock unit on the passenger side, and I'm attempting to remove it so that I can troubleshoot it. There are, of course, the various connecting rods with the funny little plastic clips, which I have removed. Apparently, the folks on the assembly line weren't there the day that the Haynes manual declared that all of the connecting rods, including the one that goes up to the door handle, were held on with those clips. In '85, apparently, they used some other system which I cannot decipher. At the top, it's threaded into a connecter which appears un-removable from the door handle (at least, the only way I can see to remove it is to break the plastic spacer which is holding it in). It can't un-thread, of course, because on the lock unit, it's slotted with a large-headed pin locking it in to the lock. The FSM simply says to remove it, and quite frankly, I figured that part out myself. What I can't figure out, however, is how to remove it. I realize that it involves either pulling the pin at the lock or popping the rod out of the door handle, but I do not see a way to do that without breaking anything.

Any good guesses as to how this comes apart?

Having done this I can say it does come out, you just have to not be afraid to brake anything (you most likly will not) and not be afraid to bust a knukle or two (YOU WILL). It's just a real pain in the a**. When you get ready to put that pushrod back in take the plastic piece off and go ahead and put that in the hole, then push the rod into the plastic piece, they will not go in correctly if you try to do them both at the same time.

BUT, you don't need to remove any of that if it's only the lock itself your trying to remove. That all you have to do is while the pushrod is in the hole on the doorlock "swing" the clip away from the rod and simply pull the rod out. Then there is just a little clip holding the lock itself that you can get off with a flat head screw driver.

Hope this helps
