Removed belt on air pump

83 Coupe S, I removed the belt, and the car started SMOOTH and idle smoother than it ever has... But, when we started the car whitish smoke came out the back when you'd hit the choke/throttle. My roommate and I ran it around the neighorhood and the smoke stopped, but it smells horrible (worst smell ever), is the smoke/smell normal?

Well, is this smoke coming from the exhaust or is it just there in general. Because these cars will burn belts with just one belt.

humm lets analyze this, catalytic converter minus no oxygen, i guess that means its not neutralizing the CO2 N02 concentrations

White smoke, **** I havent seen a seven yet that dont smoke on startup

The smoke is coming from the exhaust, and I think a double sheeve alternator pulley is in my future... i really like how the car runs without the air pump belt on...

You shouldn't run without the air pump unless you remove the cats completely or hollow them out at the same time.

Everyone knows they clog up if driven without the air pump. The problem later is once they start clogging, you will be down on power also and have excessive backpressure-which is not good for the engine.

sounds like your burning up your cats, that would explain the smell, I would deffinelty either, remove/hollow out the cats, or put the belt back on...

So when you remove the rats nest with the tutorial, and it says to remove the air pump, you should also straight-pipe your cats? It doesn't mention this, but if I'm gonna get white smoke and stench when I remove the nest, I might reconsider... :S

I have a straight pipe on my car (still need to do the rats nest removel) and there is very little smoke. Less than most 1st gens with cats.
It does smell a little worse but not that bad......

My air pump pulley is making noise. WD40 only quiets it for a short time. How much are these things to replace? I either replace/fix air pump, or remove air pump, rats nest and cat??? Doesn't sound easy.

if your going to remove the airpump, you;ll have no prair of passing emissions, so why not go the whole nine yards and get a RB exaust system that doesnt use the air pump in the first place?

I don't have emissions in this area.

Yeah, but removing the rats nest and installing an RB exhaust at the cost of white, awful smelling smoke and occasional fire out the tailpipe?

I was honestly considering the rats nest removal and the RB exhaust (the plate for the air pump is actually shipping to me as we speak) but if it's gonna stink and spew white smoke, I don't think I will!

--- Also thought of an aftermarket flow-through cat... but an RB exhaust AND a flow through cat.... with the cat robbing some performance and costing a bundle more than the exhaust on it's own.. is it worth it?

PS: We don't have emissions testing here either... I think to pass safety though your emissions system can't have been tampered with, but even that's just a small matter of safetying it first, then removing the nest...

But Still.... how 'cool' am I gonna look if I constantly smell like crap exhaust and I spew white smoke when I drive? At *that* cost (road racing and daily driver in summer, not race-only) I will stick with the emissions control, screw the 15hp difference.

I should add that if the air pump is disabled from a car that doesn't use cats, but rather a thermal reactor equipped '79-80 SA model, the thermal reactor can get overheated as the air pump provides cooling air for the thermal reactor's inner chamber. Then when the motor is shut off, heat can transfer back into the motor from the overheated thermal reactor. If a rotor is "parked" in such a way that an apex seal is in the exhaust port window, the heat can de-tension the apex seal spring.
