Removal of Shifter Balls from Shaft
Removal of Shifter ***** from Shaft
How do I remove the shifter Shaft from the shift *****? They look to be glued together with one going inside the other at the connection point with a rubber bushing. I got new shifter "boots" because as you know rubber breaks up with age, and my shift boots were broken up and cracked. The main boot is easy to replace, but the small one which holds down your shifter into the socket where the shift ***** go can't be removed without separating the shifter shaft into two pieces. Help please...
Thanks.
Thanks.
I've got one that's been seperated. I'm not sure what the PO did, but I think there's a roll pin. The rest is just heating it to burn the rubber a little and the two parts come apart. I'm not sure how much effort it takes to pull them apart once heated.

It may be next to impossible.
You shouldn't need to take them apart to replace the lower rubber boot anyway.

The old boot can be removed over the top if you rip the rubber, but the new boot may or may not survive a trip down the shaft. The ball end and shaft can be heated and slipped apart, but will not go back together in a permanent fashion very easily
I bought a gearbox that had the shaft removed from the shifter - it looks like the prev owner had the **** bolted directly to the ball end... a truly "short shifter".
Anyway, it was an s2 box I was fitting to my s1 (shifter 4" further back), so I needed a gear stick but I didn't want the long bent one, so I embarked on the mission to seperate the stick of the ball of my spare. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I tried chemicals to dissolve the goo (imagine if a gorilla sat through a burn out comp and breathed in every dreg... this stuff was like black gorilla snot). Didn't work, tried heat - fail. Was later told an oxy, (or propane I guess) would have done it. I used power drill with long bits and scalpels, knives, files and phillips head screwdrivers to carve out the gorilla snot. Eventually I got it but it took a looong time and lots of effort.
It looked like there might have been a spot weld or roll pins, but I really think it was acutally vulcanised on.
I then drilled twice the one I'd got of, tapped it so it could have two screws go through to bolt against the shifter ball end on my s2 box. Works nicely, nice and short, but no so short I have to search around inside the console to shift.

Hey T.J.-
It helps if you armor-all the boot and the shaft, too.

I figured it out. It was possible to stretch the new boot down over the shaft without destroying it. It was pretty soft rubber. I thought it might rip but it didn't.
