Remote Gas Cover Release

Can someone describe how the remote gas cover release is suppose to work on 84-85 vintage cars?

The locking pin on my does not stay retracted. This used to happen infrequently, but it is happening more and more often. This morning I thought I was not going to be able to get it open.

This is a silly little problem, but it wont be funny one day when I run out of gas.

I just cleaned the pin real good, then sprayed it real good with WD-40 and worked it in and out...now it works fine.

as he said ... but if its pretty badly rusted, I would try to brush the rust off then paint it again.

If it fails to open, it can be accessed from the inside and opened. Use brake cleaner and a dry type lube that won't attract dust when addressing the locking pin.

The lock iself is an electric powered magnetic soleloid. It retracts when the dash button is pushed, making an audible click, returns to the out position when button is released. There is a light spring tension in the door itself that should push the door out when the pin pops in. If the door fails to move when the pin retracts, the pin will return, locking the door. Clean and lube the door hinge also.

Please don't paint the solinoid oin.

Viloa... This was the piece of information I was looking for. My door does not pop out when the button is pushed to activate the solenoid. However, the locking pin used to get hung up in the open position, most of the time. I suspect I have 2 issues to address. 1) the door does not have spring tension to push it open 2) the locking pin needs to be cleaned.
