relay? switch? I'm blowing fuses!!
I have an 84 GS that until saturday was pristine. I washed the motor and it seems I either created a problem or brought one to the surface. I've had two other RX-7s, but haven't seen this one yet.
Everything is perfect on startup. A few seconds after it starts, the 20 amp fuse under the dash blows, shutting the choke magnet off and I lose power to the idiot lights. The engine still runs 'til the carb is dry. With a new fuse and the key in the "on" position (engine off), the fuse still blows and I lose the idiot lights. Through all of this the engine still turns over and everything else seems just fine.
My guess is a fuel pump relay or the ignition switch.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

there is a check relay mounted on the drivers side of the engine compartment. It is usually a goldish yelow color and it has two connectors that attach to it . go to the bone yard and pick one up and swap it out. This should fix the probem , if not it is in the wiring.

Just spent hours on the same problem. Try checking the inline fuses in the dash under the steering column. I think there are 3 of them. One of mine came lose in the holder and shorted itself out. My car did the same thing yours is doing. Good Luck

I looked under the dash for the inline fuses. It doesn't look like anyone has been under there for years. Will I have to remove panels to access the fuses?

The fuse you are refering to goes to several things, its a black/yellow wire, it splits off a bunch of times.
Goes the the coils, the igniters, the carb heater, the ecu several places. But I had this happen once and it was right at one of the coils, the ring terminal was bent back and touch the metal of the coil and shorted the 'engine' fuse

I appreciate all your help. I checked everything that you guys suggested and even got some input from the local Mazda dealership. I did everything at once and she runs now, so I'll send out a blanket thanks to everyone for the advice.
