Regulator on the end of GSL-SE Fuel Pump?

Changed out the fuel pump on my 85 today - When I popped the plastic cover off of the end of the regulator or damper dingus on output end of the pump its adjustment screw just plain fell out.

So what does this thing do, and should the adjustment be set to anything?

Of course I'm planning to crank it tight and send it seaward for now...
