refueled...now wont start

ok so my 1.1l rx ran outa gas the other day. it hapened at home while it was warming u so i got off lucky i guess. anywho...went up to the barn and grabbed a gas can that was half full and poored it in

i go and try nd start it again and nothing happens...im like **** maybe its bad gas?

i went and got 5 gallons of fresh fuel and dumped it in the tank....it'll crank and crank and crank...every other time it'll start for a second then die again. im thinking either there was bad gas in the can when i poored it in...water in there....or possibly my dad may have put deisel in the gas can rathen then the effing deisel can we have!

im at a loss guys. poped the distributor and cleaned contact point...still nothing...primed the carb...still nothin

i noticed coil number one "closest to nose of car" is wet...maybe no spark? im by myself so i cant check the coil...noone here to crank it over for me

ideas???

if there was watered down gas/deisel it wasnt more then 4 gallons worth...did i just kill my motor? help guys please

Do you have spark? Is gas getting to the carb (look in the windows)?

Maybe consider draining the gas tank and starting over, if the answer to the previous quesions is yes.

like i sayed i am by myself. seeing as it will start to run for a second or too i am assuming i have spark. and yes fuel is getting to the carb. i can hear the fuel pump

my main consern is potential damage to the motor because of either water in fuel or possible diesel...which is why i didnt bother searching for no starts. i feel these details are key to my problem

No it didn't damage your engine. Water or diesel wont hurt it. What I would do is this: empty your gas tank. If you want an easy way that will take forever you can pull the hose that goes into your carburetor off the carb and route it to a gas can or something, and turn the key to the on position.

Change your fuel filter. It may have gotten clogged when you let the tank run dry with extra gunk that was at the bottom of the tank.

Pull all your spark plugs. Clean them off.

put the fuel line back on the carb.

Crank the car with no plugs in it. Some people will pull the fuses for the fuel pump and ignition system while doing this for extra safety.

put the plugs back in again (replace them if they look crummy)

Make sure you are getting spark

Charge the starter battery fully with a charger or use another car to jump it for extra juice

Reassemble everything and start your car

If I missed anything check out the FAQ page for 1st gens there is a great writeup for no-start situations.

thanks for the help

i ended up dropping the tank and doing a full new tune up. found a coil was wet with oil so i ended up replacing it also

filled the tank with premium and have run 2 tanks of gas through the motor "drove the crap outa tha car over the weekend"

now it runs great again

Premium does nothing for you, and your motor will be happier with the lowest octane you can find (I've heard rumors of 85 still being available, but haven't seen it in years).

If you are going for a cleaning effect (which might not be a bad idea) then run a can of Seafoam through the gas tank. I can always feel a significant increase in horsepower when I dump that stuff in.

Glad to hear you got her running again. What did the gas look like when you drained it?
