Rebuilding 13b's

My 85 GSL-SE has about 220,000 miles on it, its still goin but i doubt itll go another 10,000 miles but i dont wanna just loose the car, obviously i wanna put a new engine or rebuild it. Im not very mechanically smart and i would have no clue how to do that. My question is should i just get a manual and try to rebuild it myself, pay someone to do it (ofcourse i cant find anyone that knows squat about rotarys), buy a new engine and get someone to install it for me. Which ever would be the cheapest and least dangerous for the car is obviously what id go after. Also how much would it cost me if i got a new engine to just put a twin turbo rotary, if it will even fit in my car, cost. Thanks!

there's alot of JDM stuff for sale at a ton of websites, for quite cheap. That'd be the quickest, easiest way. Just be careful, 13B turbo motors, are mostly FI, and most likely you're going to need some aftermarket stuff to give it a little pep.

Why do you think that you only have 10k left on your current motor? Is it making noise? Are you not maintaining it?? Describe the current condition of the motor. How often have its fluids been changed?? What condition is your chassis in??

The cheap option is to get a junk or used engine. If its junk rebuild it yourself, if its used, clean it up, keep it stored properly (oiled, covered + dry) and wait till your motor goes or you have an expert to coach you with the install.

The only slightly more expensive option is to get a reman motor. $1000-1500 seems to be the going rate. Shop around, find a good rebuilder, and watch for feedback on thier work here.

The 'i have money' option is to buy a new motor with all the goodies and drive your car to the nearest rotary shop and have it done.

If the motor seems strong, doesn't use more than a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so and doesn't smokescreen hard during upshifts/downshifts then I wouldn't worry about it.

Heck if it runs good but smokescreens, I still wouldn't worry about it too much. Mine will smokescreen when I do a heavy downshift or if I hold high RPMS (5000 plus) for an extended period of time. It still runs and starts fine and doesn't use that much oil, so I'm not too worried.

Rotaries are supposed to burn oil. Let us know how much oil.

eg: a quart every 1000 miles?

It sounds like your oil O rings are kinda tired. I wouldn't worry too much about it this month. Maybe you should ask Santa for a rebuild kit.

Does Santa have a source for a rebuild kit (with apex seals and all the goodies) for less than what a decent reman motor will go for??? He's a nice fat jolly old man, but doesn't want to drop $1000 on my rotary fetish.

its too bad that RA doesn't do the early 13b 6 ports. They generally have pretty good prices. Basic rebuild kit for s4 engine is about 500
