Rearend Gasket question

Is there a gasket around the third member ? or is permatex or some other tubed material used there ? I have a small leak there and am about to put a stop to it.

I can't find the part in the microfiches, don't see it mentioned in the FSM for '81, and only see a reference in the Hayne's that just says to remove any gasket material blah blah blah.

No gasket, sealant only to mount the diff to the housing.

Yep...trochoid's on top of this one, as usual! I just used some black Permatex.

Its not a real simple task if you don't have the rear end just about torn apart. Because of the way the axle shafts are inserted into the 3rd member, you have to remove the axle shafts before the 3rd member can be removed. I just thought I would mention this in case anyone is thinking about easily fixing a leak.
