Arrow rear main seal and....

Hey guys,
I posted a while ago about having clutch problems, and when i pulled the engine I found there was oil covering the disk. So i was told its probably the rear main seal. I Just took the flywheel off today, and I found that the seal isn't in too bad condition its a little softer than the new one, but not too bad, or britle. This bothers me, and makes me think its something else. I noticed that sealing what i believe to be the stationary gear is some Shadey silicone, I'm not sure if this is right, or if its a cheap patch job, but i wanna know if i can take that off, and re seal it, or better yet if i can buy a new seal for it. I've attached a pic that shows the silicone. Please help me, i'm a little clueless. I just wanna stop this oil leak. There still seems to be some oil comming from inside the Eccentric shaft where the pilot bearing is. Thanks in advance for any help.

-Matt

I can't offer any advice, sorry. But I would also DEFINITELY like to find out what is going on there. I am getting ready to change my rear main oil seal as well. Figured it would be good preventative maintenance while I had the engine out. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a good answer.

are you sure its not comming from your tranny? clean everything down with degreser/parts brake cleaner or carb cleaner.. the bolts on the rear of the engine (17) of them 1 of them might be leaking but you said its around the pilot bearing, thats why I said check the tranny

staionary gear in the back where it mounts to the plate didnt have any seals OEM

It's coming out of the pilot bearing? That's just a little cavity in the end of the e-shaft. It's definately coming from somewhere else.

I'd say the oil might be coming from the threads on the end of the E shaft. It's possible oil is seeping past the flywheel nut. That's why stock engines have sealant back there. I've personally never used sealant, but I might start using it on my next engine rebuild or flywheel swap.

As for leaking from the pilot bearing hole, the end of the E shaft either has a staked-in plug in it, or is solid (machined) steel. Besides, you'd clearly be able to tell whether the needle bearings have oil or grease on them by poking a finger in it and examining the contents.

thanks for all the qucik help, SO i found the tranny front cover was leaking a bit as well, and in bad shape, so i put a new rear main seal, pilot seal, tranny front cover and seal, new clutch and pressure plate, and last a new release bearing. I hope that should do it. I'm looking forward to puting it back in and beaing able to accelerate again. Thanks guys. one last thing, I Just zipped the flywheel back on with an impact gun, i heard i should use a torque wrench to make sure i have the proper tightness. Will i be ok?

Probably. How big is your impacter, and what is its torque rating (if you happen to know it)? I' have a Craftsman 1/2" drive that can get the nuts off easily on all the engines I've done so far. I trust its ability to tighten them too. I usually buzz it untill the rotation slows way down. It 'feels' tight, if there is such a thing with an impact wrench.

I use a 3/4 drive 2 1/8" impact socket with a 3/4 to 1/2 adaptor for my impact wrench. It works perfectly.
