Rear Ends Question

Hello, im new to this forum and i have gotten some very useful information from this site.. i am also new to RX-7's but i am very intrigued by their engines... I got my '83 RX-7 Limited Edition from my dad last summer, but we have owned the car for years and years.. it has been sitting out at a friends farm for about 3 years and pulled out of there about a year ago. I have heard that it is not good for these cars to sit because the Apex seals go bad, but amazingly the car started right up.. (After i tapped on the carb. bowl to make the fuel stop running into the carb endlessly and changing oil) ANYWAYS...

I recently just bought an 85 RX-7 for a parts car to make my car whole again and its an Automatic... (mine is a manual 5-speed). BTW both cars have the 12a engine.

My question is this.. Would it be a good idea to swap the rear end out of the other car into mine? I dont know much about the rear ends (or rear ends in general.. lol) I hear alot about people swapping rear ends in these cars so i was just wondering if i have one of those good rear ends.. Any info you guys can help me out with will be appreciated.

Also, whats the deal with the fuel pumps in these... i think mine quit on me.. and im sure its not bad.. so is it that the wiring goes bad most of the time?

First, welcome to the forum, second, apex seals don't go 'bad' from sitting. The usual problem is the volitiles evaporate out of the carbon build up in the the housings and the apex seals stick. Secondary problem will be rust if there was any moisture or coolant in the combution chambers.

The only reasons to change out the rear end are:

1. The 85 has disc brakes and lsd.

2. The LE rear end is shot.

Some people believe the 83 is the strongest housing. That I cannot confirm from experience.

A fuel pump sitting that long will often fail. Have you changed the fuel filter and flushed the fuel tank? Both of those should have been done before first attempt at starting, along with changing all fluids.

The rear end you want is out of a GSL, which has the disc brakes and LSD. Get the driveline with the new rear end, and its a direct bolt in, really easy to do and WELL worth it.

Ok, thank you guys.. and trochoid, your probably right bout the fuel tank being emptied before starting it, i didnt do that because i hadn't thought of it.. I am thinking now that i should change my fuel filter, and do you guys think that my pump failed or is it more likely the wiring to it? Im kindof hoping that its the fuel pump because i will just steal the one from the 85 and put it into my LE.. *hopes*

unless you have a mouse problem (chewing wires) your chances of the wirning going bad are slim. at worst you might get a bad ground due to rust but thats about it.
