i know there are a few differences between an 79-83 rear end to a 83-85, but can they just be swapped directly out? im having difficultly finding a new axle's for my 1980 rx and i was wondering if i could just swap in a later year rear end

How many do you need or would you rather just have a whole rear end as a spare? I have several 79-80 rearends

midway through 83 (or maybe just starting at 84) they had the rear end change, where the driveshaft will not bolt up to the later year unless you had a matching shaft also.

You'll want to take the driveshaft and parking brake cables with you when you take the new rear end, and you'll need to adapt your coarse brake line fittings on the car to the fine brake line fittings on the rear end.

+1 when doing the rear end swap you have to take all the hard lines, the rear end, e-brake, and brake master cylinder...let us know what happens

If You Go With The 84-85 Rear Then You Might Think About Upgrading The Front To The 84-85 Spindles And Brakes, That Way Later On You Can Upgrade The Brakes To The Second Gen Big Calipers And Rotors Later On.
