Rear End Slop

Well the title sounds sick but unrelated to by problem I am experiencing some play in my ring and pinion. I can turn my drive shaft a bit more than a 1/4 of an inch before movement of my wheels. I was told by an old mechanic that that just comes with wear and tear of an automobile. Any suggestions other than having to replace ring and pinion gears?

I don't know how much is normal, but my '85 has lots "o" slop. Poor maintenance doesn't help. I know the diff. lube was like mud when I first changed it.

I try to minimize the noticability of it by smooth throttle/clutch synchronization when starting, or while shifting. Even my RX8 has some slop.
