Unhappy Rear end shelled out.

So driving to work today and i can literally see the building. Stop at a 4 way stop wait for my turn and start going. I get to about 3k rpms and hear a HUGE pop sound come from my rear. My engine rpms climb and i stop in the middle of the intersection... So i dropped it in neutral.. Tried 1st again nothing but a weird noise.. Yay now i get to push the car. Push it out the intersection and i throw it in 1st.. hit the gas a bit (1500 rpm) and look under the car at the driveshaft... wich is spinning like a champ. Buttt im not going anywhere. When i rev it to like 3-3500 in gear it makes a weird high pitch sound that the best i can describe it would be almost like a wind up toy that you pull it back and the car goes forward.. Sounds almost like a splined piece of metal rubbing against a smooth piece of metal. I just replaced the rear wheel bearings on the car less than 500 miles ago too wich makes me believe i installed the axles incorrectly somehow?? i dont see how thats possible tho since the rear was perfectly quiet.

Anyways theres whats up with the car heres my real question. I have the rear out of my old car a 84 GSL that groaned like crazy in that car no chattering of the LSD just the bearings were worn out. Is there any writeups on rebuilding these rear ends floating about.. Cuz this car is my DD and the only running car i have so im kind of SOL at this point. Any help would be appriceated...

well sounds like you broke a ring/pinon tooth did the same thing with mine. when the pinon was in the gap between good teeth it would go WHIRRR WHIRRR when reved and not moving. when i moved the car forward so the gears meshed up again and carried enough momentum to get past that broken tooth i would get the most horable crunching sound. so sounds like you need a new ring or pinon

This, same thing happened to me... took about 4 teeth out of my ring gear. I just picked up a new axle, figure $150 and a 2-3 hour swap is better than $40-50 and a 5-6 hour rebuild.

The quickest way to get back on road is a new diff, if you can locate one and get it to your location promptly.

i have a spare rear that needs rebuilding from my 84 GSL. I drpped it off at a transmission place (200$ to put all new bearings in it) so i guess im riding my motorcycle till its done on monday. Ugh. Im really kinda lookin forward to takin this rear apart and see what happened.. Cuz i was at like 3k rpms and less than 10 MPH i sure as hell didnt think i was gonna break a rear at those speeds.
