Rear-end noise and steering wheel trouble

I have an '83 GS and I'm hearing some odd noises from the rear. There is a "clunk" sound often when I let off the gas while driving. At first I thought it was the U-joint, but I swapped out the driveshaft (u-joints included) from my parts car and the noise persisted. I noticed that there is a slightly larger amount of backlash on the differential than normal when I twisted it by hand, but I don't know why it would make that much noise. I've never had a chance to watch the car while it is driving, but I am starting to wonder if it's just the exhaust flames that I hear so much about. But I am still skeptical because it sounds more like a "clunk" than the "pop" that I am accustomed to. Anybody know what I'm hearing?

I also have a new problem that came about when my brilliant friends in my automotive class decided that the best way to take the steering wheel off of the steering column is to put your feet on the floor, grab the wheel, and pull like there is no tomorrow. Well, after few tries they managed to yank it off, but now the entire inside shaft slides in and out about an inch, maybe a little less. This reaks havoc on the turn signal, and is fairly annoying. Is there any way to fix this other than buying a new steering column?

If I've asked anything stupid, forgive me. I ran a search and checked the faq, but I couldn't seem to find anything. Thanks
