Rear end interchangeability

I tried searching this with no result...

I'm wondering though.. Will a rear end assembly.. disc brakes & all from a 84-85 GSL fit into a '82 GSL and vice-versa? Same driveshafts?

I know they are different.. but do they mount up exactly the same?

Thanks

1981 to 1983 housings have small bearings and splines.
1984 and 1985 housings have large axle bearings and splines.
1981 to 1983 rear end chunks have small drive shaft flanges.
1984 and 1985 rear end chunks have large drive shaft flanges.

1984 and 1985 GSL-SE axles are longer than Non-SE. The extra length is from the bearing outboard.

All housings will bolt into all chassis. Drive shaft mount flange will swap from 1981-1985 rear end chunks. (you must replace the crush spacer if the nut is removed)

Actually 83 is the mutt year, it has the small bearings as you say, but it has the larger 84/85 style driveshaft flange. So to answer the original post's question you'll need the 83-85 driveshaft to make everything work. No big deal.

On the 83's it could be either the small or large flange. I believe it was a mid-year change. :-)
