Smile Rear End FOUND

i WAs at the junkyard today..... from 12-4 pm... I found a GSL with 4 wheel disk brakes.... Is this common?? I thought the GSL-SE was the only 4 disk in the 1st gens then I took the axles off... then the LSD.... which I've been needing... even though I have a GSL-SE hopefully the GSL LSD will work.... that thing is HEAVY... I also found a stock Power Antenna ... I also got a CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER... total of $61 including the 3rd member.... The only problem was... HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE BRAKE LINES?? i cut the lines on the junk yard car..... Do you use silicone to seal it when stalling the rear...??

I'm not possitive, but I believe the gsl would need to be a 84 or 85 for the centersection to work in you gsl-se do to the size of the axles.
I might be worng, but you might want to check into this before tearing into your car.

Later

Yes only 84 and 85 GSL have bigger axles like the GSL-SE.

Yeah! the GSL I took it out from look like a 84-85 model... because of the interior... It look like mine burgundy with the 140 mph tach and wiper in the back..... I was surprised to see the GSL with 4 disk... because I usually see them with the drum brake in their.... I still wanna know how to remove BRAKE LINES the easy way.... and other question popped in my head... Changing the Clutch masters cylinder... how do you bleed the system????

thanks

You would need to bleed the clutch master at the slave cylinder after you manually purge/bleed the master cylinder before installation. There is a bleed nipple located down there by the slave. I believe it was a 10mm, but maybe even as small as an 8mm. Bleed it like you would the brakes. Good luck on installing the clutch master. That 12mm is one of the harder to access nut, you'll need a swivel somewhere along the way.

To remove the brake lines without rounding off the nuts, you'll need a 10mm flare nut wrench.

happy rotoring...

Yes, 84-85 axles are bigger making the whole rearend a little bit heavier but at the same time stronger.

FYI: you can use an 84-85 rearend on the earlier models if you use the 84-85 driveshaft and vice versa.

I'm getting a 85 GSL rear end tomorrow at a salvage yard for my 80 SA. At least I believe that it is a GSL because it has four wheel disc and 4 bolt wheel moutings instead of 5 which would make it a GSL-SE. My question is the drive shaft has already been pulled and is gone. But they have a second 85 with rear drum brakes. Will the driveshaft off the other 85 work?

Ok, just to get it in line. I did this swap over a year ago. The intire GSL housing and third member. I just didn't use the the axles because the the brake rotors were frozen on and worthless. However the axles ARE the same. It is the rotors that are different. The GSL brake rotors are smaller so you need to keep the SE rotors.

The LSD works great, just different gearing. 3:9xx as opposed to 4:076. You wont be able to tell the difference except when it comes to getting rubber in 3rd gear.

Like the guy said use the flare wrench. Try to use a good quality one too. I used one bought at the zone on my tranny lines on the Saturn and it rounded the nut off! Wound up using the old vise grips. I knew I should have gone to Sears and bought Craftsman.

About a 3 hour job, so drink beer and enjoy.

Oh yea, use the RED RTV sealant on the 3rd member. No, there is no gasket for it ! I say that because so many have asked about a gasket for the 3rd member, and there isn't one.
