Cool Rear Coilover kit $499 12way

http://www.paradiseracing.com/SCcoiloverkits.htm

Has anybody installed one of these kits yet? This is the next level for me if I'm going to make the 1st Gen competive in Drifting.
Power is next.....

I've heard that rear coil overs are crap on cars like ours with the solid rear axel. A large part of my opinion is based on Option and Hyper Rev magazines for the AE86, almost all drift, grip, whatever AE86s use coils and shocks. I think something about how the spring gets remounted makes the car weird. Stick with the springs and shocks, I know AE86 drifters use up to TRD 600 springs and they cut them to the ride height they want. Sounds low tech, and ghetto some times, but if thats how all the best cars are set up it cant be that bad.

600.......as in 600lb!!??

If thats so,Id hate to feel what that rides like.I run 175lb'ers all around and its plenty stiff for my tastes.
Also, notice that body mods are required,as would be expected. You are now supporting all the sprung weight of the car with a mounting point originally designed for just the shock, which sees very little load compared to the spring. On a first gen ,Id just stick with the stock configuration.

I would think moving the springs to the shock mounts would throw the dynamics off a bit, and I agree with Steve, no way would I trust the stock shock mounts to carry the body/spring load.

Good feedback guys, right now I'm running 200# Eibach springs with 2 deadcoils cut for ride height. I want to get the rear under control at some point, Panhard or something else.
I like the shots of the 1st Gen Mule cars with the 2nd Gen IRS installed for testing at Mazda.....makes a wild man dream!

Yea the factory shock mount points aren't strong enough for a spring to be mounted there.. You can try it though. If you brace it it should work. Directfreak is running coilovers with his Ford 9" ask him.

I agree with everything posted above: Dynamics change, spring rate way to stiff, body to weak to support without modification.

I would also add that the kit really is nothing special. They have not done anything you could not do yourself by assembling the correct parts.

the shocks ripped through the body after hard springs were put on. It cornerred really flat........for a while.

the shock mounting points needed to be reinforced

I don't see that it would even be worth the effort. Respeed offers adjustable perches (which I am currently using) that don't require any modification and work great. Height adjustment is a breeze, and they don't change the mounting point where the spring meets the body. I believe they also run about half the cost of the coilovers mentioned in the first post. Stick with Billy, he's done his homework...

speedracer not: That's what I wanted to know. Glad to hear someone at least tried them out...sorry about your mounting points. That's what I was afraid of and couldn't believe that no one had tried those guys/that setup out...

kentetsu: I have the utmost respect for Billy and ReSpeed, I just like to see what other people come up with...I drool over the ReSpeed site daily. I've got issues...but then again- don't we all? I just get excited when I find new stuff for a 1st gen...as we all know the companies supporting us are few and far between.

I actually talked to one of the guys from paradise racing and he was NO HELP whatsoever....not to flame just saying technically speaking I wanted to hear some feedback about the set up and how it changed dynamics, did they test it on a car, did they have any problems with the mounting points breaking-warping- etc. etc.

so thanks all!
zach

Yeah, if everyone put the time and effort into their products that Billy does it would be a perfect world. I did notice that the company posted above with the coilovers have a disclaimer "have to modify body" or something like that. Wonder if that was there all along, or recently added after numerous failures....
