Rear Cargo/Sunroof Straps?? What The...

Ok, I know this is a really stupid question, but how do they work? I have an 83, and I reinstalled all my interior and I have the complete strap assembly (I think). Ive seen two other cars in the junk yards with the same stuff I have in my car, yet I cant figure out how they might work or link together... Theres the single rear strap coming from the middle under the cargo light, and then the "loop" strap that has both ends bolted down towards the front. Now, I take my sunroof off, put it in the bag, put it in the back, but then while driving sometimes it moves and "bangs" around when turning. I really want to stop this from happeneing since its a glass sunroof. I looked in my owners manual, and it just shows a lame picture of the sunroof strapped in, it doesnt show or tell how to do it.

So, basically, I have conqured all other parts of my car, including the more complicated, yet this damn strap assembly has got me baffled .

~T.J.

PS - Also while I was reading in the owners manual about the sunroof and whatever, they tell you that the bag is for the sunroof and wind deflector. At a quick glance, it doesnt look like the wind deflector is removable... Is it easily removed for storage also, or was this just a "typo" in the manual?

here are the straps in use:

Basically the strap goes through the buckle, around the bar on the sliding piece, then back in on itself. The slider then snugs down to hold the strap from slipping.

Yeah, but the 84-85 cars have a different setup than the 79-83 (1 from the back, 2 from the front...Kinda). There are 4 straps (2 from the front, 2 from the back) in the 84-85 style interior as I understand it, and they also make much more sense than the older version. I just dont get how my style works. Thanks for trying though ...

three work in a Y pattern - the two from the front go to the one at the back.

Yeah, I know that, but how can you secure anything with it? How does the front strap attach to the rear strap? There are no buckles or anything on any car Ive seen other than one that doesnt seem to be of any use...

there should be a small clip on the top strap closest to the driver, the back strap should be adjustable, like mantis says, it works in a Y shape, very simple, the small clip on the top strap interconnects to the adjustable part on the back strap...If that makes any sense, I'll try to take a picture tonight.

Hmmm...I must be missing a piece then... Mine only has the adjustable part on the back, and all the cars Ive seen in junk yards seem to be missing this piece as well. I would really appreciate a picture so I know what Im looking for .

I would rather just figure out how this is supposed to work and see if I can get it right. Im partially trying to keep my car stock, but also improve performance and what not. Its a weird thing. Certain things I just want stock I guess, like the interior to an extent because I want a rear cage, harnesses, and race seats, lol.

I haven't had this car too long but I think I've got it figured out right.

The strap coming from the back (the bottom part of the "Y" when at the back of the car) has a little metal square attached to it and is adjustable.

The strap that forms the two arms of the "Y" has a metal piece attached to it that has a short, bent arm sticking out from it. Near as I can tell, that arm gets shoved into the square hole (all you perverts can leave right now! ) and holds pretty good.

So you just put the sunroof in the back, top up, pull the two metal buckles together, put the metal arm through the middle of the square buckle coming from the back, and adjust the rear strap to hold it down.

Works for me!
