what's the proper term for the rod that connects the front of the rear axle to the bracket that's mounted to the rear fender well? also is it pretty common for those brackets to rust?

Yeah I have heard of forum members with rusty brackets. Not _real common_ but that may be a result of geography. Not good - some major surgery - and if THAT area is rusty, can be sure other areas are done too
Having said that, handy folks here have repaired these, so if your...handy....?
