Really newbie question - what does "Choke" do ?

I searched, but didn't find a direct answer. This is my first carburated car, and I am not sure as to what "Choke" does besides looking neat when being pulled in and pulled out .

The choke is used for when the engine is cold. When it is out, it keeps the carb idle up so the engine wont die. I dont know what else it would do.

yes it runs fast but what the choke does is choke off the air to the engine, so it runs really rich to help it start and heat up faster.

I first saw this question and laughed but then I realized with the age of alot of the folks on here there are lots of people that have never had to deal with a choke!! Everything I owned had chokes......snowmobiles, motorcycles, gokarts.......and RX7s. I guess I am getting older

oh yah, 82streetracer is right...hehehe
