ready to make my short shifter...

went to the junk yard today, never seen so many first gens out there. i pulled the shifter out of one of them. i didnt know they kind of bend below the main shaft to the pivot point (big ball). can someone instruct me on where to cut and what to remove/flip/whatever else is needed. i really want to do this.. is sitting right here looking at me saying it wants to be shorter... in a way.. i guess...

I assume you just want to cut it down?

First you need to seperate the top from the bottom half of the shifter. The bottom part actually sits in a socket filled with rubber to prevent vibration. You need to burn all that **** out with a torch... I used an oxy welder.

Once that's done, you can cut off as much of the top part as you wish. Just make you sure you leave enough of a female socket so it's easier to weld back together.

Just a word of warning though, I had this for a while but I ended up going back to the stock shifter. It was just too notchy and required a lot of effort to shift escecially now that my gearbox is worn out. Next time I'll get a proper 'short-shifter'.

im not getting exactly what you are saying.. i see the bushing and i couldnt pull it out.. so i guess whats what you are talking about.. can you possibly make lines where to cut on this and what to take out? i would GREATLY appreciate it. me and my dad are arguing back and forth on how to do this.

Holt it upside down. See all the black **** inbetween the two halves? Get rid of it. Seperate the two halves, and either thread the ball end, or if its too short, cut some off the shift **** end and weld it on.

I did that and it sucked ***. I threw the cut one away and put a series 5 shifter, ****, and boot. Much better.

The part that the arrow points to is filled with rubber. If you burn it out the shifter will come apart in two pieces. Then you just trim the top part and weld it back together. That way you retain the original thread.

does the rubber go all the way up through the inside till it shifter starts to tapper off? if so, when i cut it down, does i need to stick a washer in there to compensate for the space the rubber took up?
