RB Holley Idle Trouble

I've got the car running so I figure I'm 90% there already. The car's an 84 GS. RB Holley intake/carb. RB exhaust. Everything else is stock but all the emissions are off.

The car will only idle down to about 1600. It's a bit rough and jumps up and down between 1500 and 2K. Setting the idle screw and unscrewing the throttle cable a little will drop the idle but it won't maintain and dies below 1300. I set the timing and it's pretty steady. I'm hearing a high pitched whine every once in a while that goes away at higher rpm - belt issues, since I just changed it?

Any suggestions to what I can do to get the idle straight and where it needs to be???

Think it's with the manifold or the carb itself? Anyway I can check and hunt for it? What can I do?

Old schoolers use wd40, much safer than starting fluid.

OK, so I spray WD40 at the mating surfaces of the manifold and engine, and around the manifold and the carb. Sounds easy. Anything else?

Oh yeah, I might have goofed with something. When installing the manifold, I used the gasket, but I didn't put on any gasket sealer. Could that be my problem. I guess I just didn't think about it. Dummy me.

The fact that you didnt use gasket sealer is not likely the problem. I didnt use any on my install, oh I guess I did just around the o-rings. Anyhow it should seal without the sealer. Look for other air leaks. Also once you have found/taken care of that problem make sure your choke is opening properly and totally.

try the little brass screws on either side of the metering block. Ususlly they're pre set from Holley but you put it on a 7 and not a small block V8 so just like every other universal thing it doesn't work on a wankel. Turn the screws in all the way and then back them out 1 and 1/2 turns. If it doens't start at all then keep trying by turning them out by 1/4 turn increments. Mine idled nice at about 1 and 3/4 turns out, but elevation and climate have a lot to do with it. And you know you'll be forever adjusting a Holley? I think its worth it though, mine makes good power.

oh you don't need to put any gunk on the gasket....it only makes it harder to take the carb off later.

oh crap, I just noticed you're using a 465... don't you think that's a little big for a 12a? I'm using a 395 with vaccuum secondaries on a 13b. You might be chokin it out with too much mix! 'Ol Dave Atkins is definitly the leading authority on the Holley though. Ever see those superchargers of his? Oh it makes my mouth water!

Good to hear! I met BlueRenessis82 at a Road Atlanta event last month. He's from up your way. I'm going to try to drive up for a Road America event sometime. Hope to catch you there.

It's the Racing Beat Holley specifically for the 12A though. I didn't doctor anything up. I got it from a 12A owner who was upgrading to a 13B. It was in a stock motor and ran well there.

I've got the idle at 1500 now pretty smooth (maybe up and down 100, but pretty steady). It does backfire though but not very frequently. Does the whine/moan indicate a vac leak? It's not my belt, I just changed that and I know it's not making any noise. When the gas is pressed, the moan goes away.

the carb might have a blown power valve. Got a rebuild kit? If not then you should buy one just to keep around. They're pretty cheap and handy.

No rebuild kit. The idle is pretty steady now at 1400 and doesn't move up or down more than 100 rpm. I just have to reduce it now and have it stay steady
