Cool Rat's Nest question

I'm a nuub.
I recently acquired an '81 RX, and the the shutter solenoid is plugged and the sensing tube from it to the coasting valve is deliberately plugged. The hose from the coasting valve to the air cleaner is also deliberately plugged. I reattached them, but it seems like the idle is a little lumpy since I did - like there is an occasional miss. Does anyone have any idea what the reason for this is?

Sorry, cant help ya there, but i hear that once you remove the rats nest and plug off all the unnecessary vacuum lines, it will run much better.

a vacuum leak might have developed. Double check the lines to make sure there is no leak.

Yeah -- that's exactly why it was plugged..... it's probably bad or going bad. Basically it's used to slowly and smoothly bring the car down from higher RPM's in or out of gear. With it being plugged off, you'll notice some "sputtering" sounds as it winds down. It's no big deal, just can be annoying. But it doesn't affect anything else, only winding the engine down smoothly.

Here's an article you'll find interesting specifically related to your question....
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/shutter.htm

And here's a good site with A LOT of your potential questions asked and answered already:
http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/garage.html

And I wouldn't worry about replacing it (or having it replaced)....it'll go out again soon anyway, so what's the point?

It's supposed to make it from sputtering down? Hell mine always sound like it was spitting, then I took off my emissions and my car idles smooth as hell now and decels without any weird hesitation or poppy sounds like with the shutter valve. (Of course, maybe mine was bad?) heh

Check out Tom's "rats nest removal" under the FAQ section. I did it, EZ and only took about 3 hours. Sure does eliminate all that BS clutter and runs better too!

Talking

thanks guys. You guys are great! I have shut it off again, and idle is nearly perfect. I could swear that it's even smoother than before I unplugged the dang hoses.

I would love to remove the rat's nest altogether, but I am afraid that it won't pass emissions here in MD if I do. Any thoughts about the effect that removal of the rat's nest has on emissions?

The rats nest is all the emissions stuff. It is all run off of vacuum. If you have a smog test, i would make sure and check laws and see what you can/cant take off first.
