It's not silver or red, that's for sure.

This coming from the owner of 5 silver FB's. Only one red one, though.

I just got an all original 5/78 build date spark yellow non/moonroof,non AC GS from the original owner.I guess maybe I got one of the rare ones?I am really debating what to do with it.I like the idea of keeping it original, but I think updating the ignition, and using my racing beat exhaust isn't straying too far from original.Right?Maybe even update the front brakes. It hasn't run in 5 years though, and I don't dare try now with the fuel in the tank being that old. What should I do about the fuel?drain it,and then what do I do with it.Do you think I should treat the tank after I drain it with a chemical sealer?Any input is appreciated.

My mom had a white automatic GS bulit in April '78 and my dad had a yellow GS 5 speed with Pacific back seats, built around the same time. Both of my parents were on the original waiting list. They were some of ther first Rx-7's shipped to New York.

Alright, this is all good. But the reason I ask is because I plan on buying one and restoring it completely to original from the ground up.

I thought a while back someone was saying that there were only like 8 first gen convertables ever made. Can anyone verify this?

There are three or four convertables in Australia. They were done by an outside company under agreement with Mazda.

Yea,Pacific Avatar did the conversions. The company was started by a Mazda dealer that thought the 1st gen would make a good vert.He built 126 of them until Mazda announced the 88 FC vert.So it was an aftermarket job none the less,so classical/antique value would probably be low.
The 83 LE was kinda rare with only 5000 examples built.
The GSL-SE got about the same build numbers I believe.

Being the oldest, the 78's would likely be the rarest, plus theres the fact that only 19,299 RX-7s were built in 78.The average numbers for the rest of the 1st gens production run was about 51,000 per year. The RX-7 sales didnt drop below 27,000 a year until 1989 when numbers hit only 16,249.

The rarest first gen is a 1983 GSL Targa. It came in one color, tornado grey, and only one color option for interior, red. 1,500 were made. At least I've been told more times than I care to count.

Goddamnit!!!
That's the friggin car I've been looking for info on...
I've stated to believe they're a myth 'cause I can spell out the total sum of info I managed to collect in about 10 words...
Thats's why I didn't peg it as the rarest....

I would KILL to get my hand on one of those...

Except you said '83 and here it is in the 81 SCG?
The one in the back, right?

The second rarest 1st gen is the RX-7.5:

But the absolute rarest 1st gen is the illusive 1978 targavertable Hydrogen-powered 4-rotor, 4-door Manumatic, AWD, RX-7 in Atomic Purple Metallic....with A/C.

Ah, the GSL-SE-Z2-GTR-HX^2 Targavertable! Don't forget leather seat version, making it the GSL-SE-Z2-GTR-HX^2 Targavertable LE! They only made 2 of those, and they destroyed the 2nd one because otherwise the 1st one wouldn't be rare enough

No, mine is actually just the targa that has the middle of the top come out, not the whole top. I'm just going by what people tell me. I've really no idea myself.
