rare opportunity
I'll have a 30k mile '85 RX7 base at my shop over the weekend for some carb work. The car belongs to a friend of mine who recently inherited it from his dad.
Aside from a ding or two & fading pinstripes, the car is immaculate. When I was restoring european cars a few years back, I wouldn't miss an opportunity like this to scope out an original for references & details.
I'm in Charlotte, N.C. near the UNCC area. You can reach me on my cell phone at 980-721-9811. Please call after 9 am est. saturday. I'm at the shop all day saturday & can open up on sunday if there's intrest.
later.

hmm
I have an 83 GSL with 33k original miles too.
What about the whole "low mileage rotary = bad news" thing people always talk about here? Surprised no one has popped in here with one of them comments.

Get it on a lift, pop a wheel front and rear and photograph all the paint dots and stripes around the brakes, driveshaft, yokes. Do the same for chalk marks under the hood and around the radiator core as well as any paint marks, stripes or dots to be found there or on the firewall. Do a little write-up and see if Jason and Co. will use it for the upcoming magazine they're trying to put together. It would be perfect.

The people that have these kinds of original, non-restored musclecars have 5 figure vehicles now, sometimes 6 figures....we're still aways from that point for 1stgens, but it will come eventually....

Mine was nearly mint when i brought it home, too bad that's the only picture i have left of the car before i ruined it. That was unwashed as well. Interior looked almost exactly like the above post aside from an aftermarket stereo.
That's the origional paint by the way, or it was stripped down to bare metal and painted. The paint code matched the paint color. Not bad for having 6 owners after it was purchased from a junkyard in '94, eh?

Took about 20 pictures of the 33,8XX mile RX7 while I worked on it this weekend. I'll upload them & post a link later. It was no way near the condition of the car in the pictures above. The cadmium plating on all the underhood components was oxidized, as was the aluminum.
The paint was in very good condition, with 3 door dings, & some minor oxidization. The dealer-installed pinstriping was in horrible shape & needs to be removed & re-applied. The owner approved a $200 exterior detailing, which I'll do next weekend. Apparently the car spent a lot of time outside, hence the deteriorating stripes & minor oxidization.
The interior was immaculate with only the factory floormats showing any sign of wear. It had the blue/gray vinyl & velour-ish cloth int.
All in all, this car is in very good condition. It was in the shop to fix a hard-starting when cold condition, new hatch lift struts & de-glaze of the rotors & drums from prolonged parking.
The hard-starting was being caused by a leaking accelerator pump diaphragm & leaking jet plug gaskets. In essence, all the fuel in the carb was leaking onto the engine. Not good. Whats really sad is that the owner had just taken it to a local deealer for repairs. They screwed in a new set of plugs, changed the oil & fuel filter & pronounced it fixed; Totally overlooking the fuel-soaked carburetor. Not very impressive.
SO anyway, I'm just new to this message board. I'm a mechanic in Charlotte, N.C. who was just trolling the internet for grounding mod tips on another customer's car & found you guys
I owned an '84 base about 7 years ago & am toying with the idea of getting a GSL-SE or S5 turbo for a fun car.
If anybody in the Charlotte area needs any help, I work at a RX7 friendly shop & am glad to help with any advice or repairs. If you need an engine rebuild, I suggest you see Bryan at Rotorsports up in Kannapolis
