Random/various questions

First off, I have a 1984 GSL-SE with 72k miles, all the questions I'm asking will be about this car.

What should the oil pressure guage read at idle, how about at accleration? I'm just trying to make sure everythings fine.

I'm getting a bit of oil underneath my car after it sits for a while. Say, if it sits for 4 days, a spot the size of a half dollar piece will be on the floor. I can't really tell where the oil is leaking from, but it seems to be more on the bottom of the car than on the ground.

My car has 72k miles, think it would be beneficial to buy some new plug wires?

My A/C is very weak, and not that cold, think window tint is worth $150? $150 would cover the rear hatch, the rear quarter windows and the 2 doors, and it comes with a lifetime warranty. The legal limit is 35%, think that'll keep the heat down some? With the back hatch on our cars, would the tinting place have to put 2 pieces of tint to cover the hatch?

My passenger side window requires some pushing to go up, think if I take it apart and clean the tracks it'll help? Also the switches seem kinda sticky, think cleaning the connections in the switches would help?

I'm needing to get my car painted soon, can the flat black trim around the front window (the stuff that fades to chrome) be painted with the rest of the car, or does it need to be done with special paint?

Sorry for the list, but I figure it's better than making alot of posts.

I'll attempt to answer some of your questions:

Oil pressure: Can't remember the numbers, but gauge should read about 1/4 (from the left) at idle, and somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 at full acceleration.

Oil under car: Make sure the oil drain plug has a good gasket (you'll be lucky if that's the problem). See if there's fresh oil under the oil pan, you'r oil pan gasket might be leaking. IMO if it's leaking at such small rate, I wouldn't worry about it. If for some reason you remove the engine, I would replace the gasket (and possibly the pan), but otherwise check your oil level regularly and keep it healthy.

A/C: I pretty much have the same question about mine. I think our A/C systems are simply not powerful enough. But oh well, I hope somebody else answers this one as I am curious too.

Window: Had same problem here. Remove the door panel and clean and tighten everything.... that did it for me.

Don't know about the paint.

Good luck!

At first when I changed the oil right after I got the car, I didn't realize RX-7s had a soft washer between the oil drain plug and the oil pan, so I tought that may have been the leak. If changed the oil again and got some of the soft washers from the Mazda place, and didn't notice the leak as much, but now it's back.

If it doesn't get drastically worse, I'm gonna ignore it.
It's leaking so little that even a month after my oil change I haven't noticed my oil dropping much, if any at all. (The car has only been driver maybe 200 miles since the last oil change, even though it was a month ago.)

Oh I see. Mine is my daily driver, and it leaks probably half a quart per month, which I don't think is too bad.

For your a/c 150.00 is more than enough to goto Jiffy lube and have the service the A/C. Should put out nice and cold then.

You might have enough left over to goto auto zone and pick up some window tint and do it yourself. Window tinting isnt that hard. All the window on the RX-7 are relatively flat making the tint job very easy.

I've heard of a few older cars having problems converting over to R-134 since it operates at a higher pressure, but I'm thinking about getting a A/C system flush, then going to Walmart and buying the R-134 conversion kit for around $35 with R-134 coolant and oil.

I'd prefer to have a professional do the tint if I'm going to do it at all.

How can you tell what you are leaking vs. what the OMP is injecting into the engine?

If you are dropping that much oil, your car must have a nice coat of motor oil under the car.

You're right... I meant to say, between the OMP and the leak, that's how much I need to put in every month. I never see drops of oil under the car, but there's always fresh oil on the bottom surface of the pan, and even when I wipe it off I'll see it back within a few weeks.

I think thats what mine is doing, it seems like a majority of the oil is on the pan instead of the ground, because when I added the new drain plug washer I wiped the oil off, and it didn't drip for a while, but it was probably building up on the pan, and then it started to drip.

I don't mind adding some extra oil, as long as a rebuild isn't in my near future..

$150 for Tint that is guranteed not to bubble or they will replace it, is a good price. The Stuff that autozone sells is not even close to the same quality and will fade in 2 to 3 years. Good pro tint will last 10 or more.

if the oil slowly drips from the oil pan then check that the bolts are tight...

i had the same problem and went under and tightened the bolts and done...no more leak...

be careful though...not too tight...these bolts snap easily...
