It could be related to the automatic transmission option. Or perhaps its a connector for the power window switches found on the console of the GSL models.

alrighty... well its not the power windows coz they still work.
what would it do for the auto transmision? i woulda thought that all those wire would go thru the centre part (i dont know, mines manny)
but thanks Moses...

i had a closer look before and its got 2 wires, both (i think) are brown with a light blue or white stripe connected to the usual white plug. (still waiting on my haynes so i cant look it up)

and it pops out just infront of where the passenger seatbelt is secured.

Power antenna? Rear window defrost? Some option that your car does not have?

to my knowledge all series 2 cars were pre wired for power windows regardless if they had them or not, i know my 81 "s" model was, from where the switches plug to in the armrest console to where the motors plug into int he doors.

im 99.999 percent sure the rear defrost was standard on ALL first gens, the only car in existance i have seen that did not have a rear defroster was a geo metro, but that speaks for itself, those cars were like 4 grand BRAND NEW, lmao

Bolox: What year is your car?

I took a look in the 84/85 wiring diagram and there is a similar connector to what you are referring to. In the 84/85 models, the connector has a brown wire and a brown wire with a white stripe. This connector is for the seat belt switch.

It is used on the driver’s side in the US (your passenger side). Maybe they didn't use the seat belt switch in the RHD cars? The only thing the seat belt switch does is it turns off the seat belt light/buzzer once the seat belt is plugged in instead of the light/buzzer being on for the 6 seconds or so.

That's the best I can figure.

Nice thing about the Mazda wiring is there was one harness for the interior. If you want to add elec. windows or rear wiper, you just need the parts. Its all plug and play.

Check the drivers side for a similiar plug going to the seat belt. It may be for the RHD

Might be for the backlighting for the auto trans shifter, or for the auto trans O/D switch.

I checked the wiring diagram for an '83 and the seat belt switch wiring is the same as the 84/85 (brown wire and a brown wire with a white stripe). You can get the wiring diagrams at:

http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/

I would think that the RHD cars would still use the seat belt switch, but maybe not. To see if you have the switch, you can pull up the carpet near wear the seat belt plugs in on the driver's side (the side of the seat belt with the button). If you have a switch, you will see a pair of wires exiting the seat belt receptacle near where the seat belt bolts to the floor. This should plug into that connector that you are talking about.

If you don't have a seat belt light/buzzer that comes on when you first put the key into start the car, than this switch won't do you any good even if it is there. Maybe someone else in Australia could chime in and tell us whether they have a seat belt light or not. It is possible that your cars didn't use them, but I don't know of where I could find a wiring diagram for the RHD cars to be sure.
