Radio works but pops

The radio on my 7 works fine, but when changing stations it really crackles and pops. And turning it off -- a loud pop! Is this just from dirty contacts that I can clean up with compresses air, or is the darn thing toast? Thx!

Changing stations and adjusting volume are controlled by two different types of electronic components. The crackling with the volume can be cleaned with contact cleaner. My experience tells me that, that is only a temporary solution. The volume control has to be changed...

Now with the stations crackling, I won't venture a guess.

Sorry Dom, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I've successfully cleaned many volume controls over the years. Certainly, a variable resistor (potentiometer (pot)) could be too far gone for cleaning to be effective, but that is relatively rare. The problem can return, but in most cases it takes a long time, and it can be cleaned again.

Now, on the tuning issue, I agree with you. It's a different situation and I'm not sure what would cause it. If it's old and hasn't been used for a while maybe there's some dirt or cob webs or something between the plates of the tuning capacitor...but that's just a guess.

Good luck!

Rich

That seems to be the norm for you and the exception for me. Sure wish it was the other way around, I would have saved a couple of bucks...

That's great, but it doesn't even come with the cleaner. I've had great results just with the cleaner itself..
