Radio Problems
I looked and could not find much information on the radio system. i have an 85 GSL-SE with the stock radio. Initially I'd get a loud pop when I turned it off then the AM band went out and most recently, the FM died as well. Is there any place in the El Paso, TX ot Colorado Springs area that works on the radio? I think that installing an aftermarket radio will not look good as the panel seems built around the current Infinity system.

well, it sounds like faulty internal components in the radio. let me first ask if you get ANY sound at all through the speakers? if not, you may want to look into amp testing and or replacement. there is one amplifier under each storage bin. sounds to me though that the radio itself gave up the ghost. you may want to post a want to buy ad in the first gen for sale/wanted section for a new radio. install the one you buy until you can get yours rebuilt. i know of shops here in ohio tha rebuild radios but none in TX.

The original Clarion decks that Mazda used on the 84/85 model years were just fine for the time, but are very dated when looking at new equipment. The solution I went with was to replace the head unit with a Blaupunkt removable face unit that feeds line-outs to a separate amp behind the passenger's seat, along with a Bazooka tube in the rear hatch area (right behind, and pointed at the back of the driver's seat). It thump. No, really - it does.
The nice thing about a small car is that you don't need a lot of sound to get good bass out of it.
I don't think I even had to cut the center console once you get the Clario decks out. My Blaupunkt head was the perfect width to just slide in there and the front face protrudes about 1/8" or so. I ordered a few of the 1st Gen 'Cassette Rack' inserts from Mazdatrix and they fill out the lower space where the factory EQ went. These were the right height, and give you storage for pens and stuff right under the stereo.
You could even get one of the newer DVD setups if you really wanted to, and I'll bet I could have that installed in about 2-3 hours if I wanted to spend the $$$ on it.
Now you've got me thinking...

I have an extra stock radio and I think I have the amps too. I have honestly never used them. I purchased the car with them uninstalled but the owner told me they worked perfectly when he took them out. He is a very trustworthy member on this forum. If you want them I will be willing to sell them. I will guaranty they work. I'll keep your money until you install it. I'll refund if anything doesn't work.
