radio buzzing

in my 80 ls when i turn the radio on i can hear the song but there is this awful constant buzzing. even when i turn the volume all the way down the buzzing remains the same. it is a stock factory radio. what could be the problem? i suspect a faulty ground. where should i begin to look? it has the original plugs and wires(only 57K on the car, it is pretty much mint i have heard cases in which this caused radio interference, but they are the correct p/w). thank you, dave

I would say ground too. But remember it is 23 years old now. The radio could just be going bad!

I had this exact same problem and it went away when I replaced all my spark plug wires.

well, i will give that a try. i didn't want to replace many of the original parts, as about 95% of the car is factory original. i suppose it can't hurt. the car runs perfect. you could balance a glass of water on the air cleaner and it wouldn't even think of jarring off. i'll order a new set and keep the old ones as spares. my garage is littered with boxes and bins of spare parts. i am an rx-7 parts pack rat.

Does the buzzing noise change at all if u rev your car up or get on it. If it does, check your fuel pump ground, thats happened on a few other cars of mine. The pump grounds through the stereo and u get to hear everything it does.

Wow, you could buy two radios for the price of wires, dizzy cap and plugs. CD players these days will play mp3's too.

hmm..... what about the condensor? It's mounted to the engine block right next to the clutch master cylinder.

They're on all FB's. It's actually the first thing I replaced when trying to qwell the radio buzzing noise I had. It's a small silver cylindrical device that's mounted to the engine block right near the clutch master cylinder. Ya can't miss it. It didn't fix my buzzing sound but it's worth a shot. Good luck!

well, i looked and could not find it. do you have a pic? i saw something mounted to the left side in the engine bay, almost up to the firewall. it was almost bell shaped and had a connector that trailed down into another connector. i thought that may be it but remembered you had said it was on the block.

Dave, I remember that condensor. It was that piece that we were wondering about on that locked up motor that we ATF'd. I think we left it on the motor, so we can try swapping it tomorrow when you get back.
